Rainbow Apples

BONUS: It is great for the kids’ fine-motor skills, they’re also VERY easy to make and encourage creativity!

I’m a home-schooling mom, trying to teach my kids all that I’m able. This activity was such a great option. It entertained them for a good long while, on top of that, it doubled as our cooking class. Even better still, it ended up being their mid-morning snack!

This activity was so much fun for my kids. They loved it so much, they were begging to do it again the very next day! Unfortunately, I had too much going on that day, so we did it again the day after.

This activity comes together really quickly. You just need apples, whipped topping, and fruity rice cereal.

Use a store-bought whipped topping, or find my homemade whipped topping recipe below.

You’ll want to make the whipped topping very first. Have it made, and chilling, ready to go.

Whipped Topping:

  • 1 1/2 cups Heavy cream – make sure the cream is chilled
  • 1/3 cup Powdered sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla
  • 1 1/2 tbsp Powdered milk

Add the ingredients to a stand mixer. Starting on low, slowly beat the mixture, until the powdered sugar is mixed in. Then turn the speed up to med./high and whip until stiff peaks form. Do NOT over whip. The cream can curdle.

And there you have it, simple as that!

This cream will stay good in the fridge for up to a week. Mine never lasts that long, my kids eat it any chance they get!

The powdered milk is optional, but this ingredients adds stability to the whipped topping, allowing it to hold its shape for days.

Apples:

Depending on how many kids you have, grab an apple or two and wash them. Core them, if you have an apple corer, then cut the apples in half lengthwise.

*I don’t have a corer, so I cut the apples in half, and carefully cored them with a knife, trying not to ruin the arch of the rainbow too bad. They weren’t terribly ugly. Lol!

After coring and cutting the apples in half, cut each half into roughly 1/4″ thick slices. Place the slices on a small plate.

Cereal:

Get a few small bowls, one for each kid, and fill them with your rainbow rice cereal. The brand doesn’t matter. Try to make sure they have enough of each color, for their rainbow.

Whipped Topping:

Get a small bowl and fill it with your chilled whipped topping.

Set up:

Grab a butter knife for each kid, and place the knives and the cream on your table next to each other.

Grab a plate for each kid, and place the plates with the remaining ingredients on the table.

Apple Rainbow

My kids were SOO excited!

Dive in with these Rainbow Apples!

Give each kid their plate, a butter knife, their personal cereal, and place a few apples on each of their plates.

I made a rainbow apple, to show them how to do it, and then I let them go for it.

Excited Rainbow Apples

Waiting for Rainbow Apples is difficult!

If they wanted to copy mine, that was great, which they did for their first apple. After that, they wanted to branch out and try different color combinations. Let them! Encourage their creativity, and see what they can come up with!

Rainbow Apples Excited

I thoroughly enjoyed watching each kid as they attempted these Rainbow Apples. Watching the different levels of coordination, based on their ages.

Making Apple Rainbows

I also got a good laugh out of the youngest. She could NOT stop eating the cream and cereal as she was decorating her apple. Lol!

Rainbow Apples Activity

Putting the rice cereal on takes a lot of patience. Getting them placed JUST RIGHT really challenged the kids fine motor skills.

This fun Rainbow Apples activity was a hit!

The best part is getting to eat them!

Yummy Rainbow Apples

My kids and I loved doing this project! It was a tasty snack that entertained them for quite a while, and it was a cheerful, colorful activity!

Rainbow Apple Activity Fun

I hope you and your kiddos have as much fun making yours as we did!!

Notes:

If you don’t have heavy cream or don’t want to use whipped topping for these Rainbow Apples, you can try using Greek yogurt or even cream cheese.

For dairy-free, peanut butter or almond butter would also be a good option, assuming there are no nut allergies.

Get creative with it, and have a blast!
