Easy Everything Bagels
These Easy Everything Bagels are so delicious, and your Littles at home can make them with you.
I am a firm believer that bread is one of the greatest foods in this world, bagels are no exception.
From the flavor, to the chewiness, to the fact that kids love them, bagels are a wonderful product.
If you want to get your Littles involved with cooking, these Everything Bagels are a good option for you.
Though they do take some time, these bagels are easy to make, and your Littles will enjoy spending time with you.
Grab your Littles and lets dive in!
- Combine the warm water, honey, and yeast in a small bowl or liquid measuring cup. Give it a quick stir, then let it sit at room temperature for 5-10 minutes. The goal here is to let the yeast “bloom”. This step is what allows the dough to rise. Very important!
2. While you’re waiting for the yeast to bloom, mix the flour, salt, grated parmesan, garlic powder, and onion powder into a large mixing bowl, mixing well with a whisk.
Get your kids involved here:
Let them help add the ingredients to the bowl. Teach them the “spoon and scrape” flour method. Spoon the flour into a measuring cup, until there is a mound above the rim of the measuring cup. With a butter knife, have the kids scrape the excess flour off, until the flour is smooth and level with the rim. Kids love being able to help, and this also teaches them hand-eye-coordination. Let your kids whisk the dry ingredients together.
3. When the yeast mixture is ready, gently pour it into the flour mixture. Mix it together well, then turn out onto a floured surface and knead the dough for 5-7 minutes. This step is a great one for the kids! If your kids are like my 9-year-old, they’ll love “beating up” the dough. 4. After kneading the dough, return the dough back to the mixing bowl. Cover with a clean towel and leave it to rise 1-1.5 hours, until doubled in size. 5. While waiting for the dough to rise, fill a pot with water, place it on your burner and turn the burner to high. Once boiling, reduce heat to med-med/high, depending on your stovetop. You want a low rolling boil. 6. Once the dough has risen, return it to the floured surface and evenly divide it into 18 balls. Mine weigh roughly 3oz., in case you want to weigh yours. 7. Roll each ball till it has a smooth surface, then press your thumb into the center of the ball, pushing all the way through. Gently circulate your thumb, to create a bigger hole. 8. Carefully pick up your bagel, and using both thumbs in the center, stretch the bagel to make the whole bigger. The dough will shrink down a little as it rises, so make sure to make your holes big enough to compensate for that. Let your kids help here, as well. Their bagels may not turn out “pretty”, but they’ll be “pretty unique”. 9. Preheat oven to 425 degrees and line baking sheets with parchment paper. 10. Let the bagels rest on the countertop while the oven preheats, then carefully place them in the boiling water. Boil the bagels for 1.5 minutes per side, boiling 3 at a time. I tried doing 4 at a time(see pic below), but they were difficult to flip. The boiling step is what gives the bagels their chewiness. For extra chewy bagels, boil 2 minutes per side. 11. Place boiled bagels on baking sheets. You should be able to fit 6 bagels per sheet. 12. In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and 1tbsp water. Brush egg wash onto the tops of the bagels, then sprinkle with your desired amount of Everything Bagel seasoning. 13. Bake for 16-19 minutes, until golden brown. 14. Let the bagels cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes, before moving them to a cooling rack.
Enjoy these bagels warm or cool, plain, with cream cheese, toasted with butter, as a breakfast sandwich, or spice ’em up with jalapeno cream cheese. It’s totally up to you!

Notes: These bagels freeze well in a freezer bag, if they don’t get eaten first. They can also be stored at room temperature, in a freezer bag, for several days. For a Plain Bagel variation, prepare as mentioned above, but remove parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, and Everything Bagel seasoning.
